In the quiet village of Taipalong, within Rajapalong Union of Ukhiya Upazila, lived a young woman named Bulbul Akter. Life had been harsh for her family. After her father’s death, the burden of raising six children—Bulbul, her three sisters, and two brothers—fell solely on her mother. Poverty weighed heavily on them, forcing Bulbul, the eldest daughter, to abandon her education and help care for the family.
Yet Bulbul never gave up hope. She longed for a way to change her family’s fate. That chance came when her mother learned about the PROTTYASHI Income Generating Activities program, which offered skills and resources to vulnerable families. Bulbul enrolled and began training in Karchupi, a traditional embroidery known for its delicate patterns. For 30 days, she practiced tirelessly, her hands weaving designs that reflected her resilience and creativity. With each stitch, her confidence grew.
Her talent soon caught the attention of SWADESH PALLI, an organization that began commissioning her embroidery work. The steady income allowed Bulbul not only to support her family but also to start a small poultry farm with ducks and chickens, gradually improving their livelihood.
In time, she married Nurul Amin, a supportive day laborer who encouraged her dreams. Together, they worked to build a brighter future. Bulbul’s earnings increased, and with newfound stability, she began to dream of returning to her studies and rebuilding her family’s home into a safe and welcoming place.
Grateful for the opportunities, Bulbul reflected: “During the pandemic, when everyone was struggling, we received BDT 9000 in incentives and a gas cylinder every month. Without their assistance, we would never have come this far.”
