Toyoba has broken free from the chains of poverty and emerged as a symbol of gender empowerment and integration in her community.
Toyoba’s husband, Rofik Alam, previously worked as a TomTom driver. The couple owned no land, and Rofik drove a rented TomTom, paying 500 takas daily to the vehicle owner, regardless of whether he earned that amount or not. His average daily income was only 200 takas, making it extremely challenging to support his family. Over time, he accumulated debt. At that time, the couple had two children, and later, Toyoba gave birth to a daughter, adding to their financial strain.
Their fortunes began to change when Bulbul, a field facilitator, prepared a list for beneficiary selection and chose Toyoba as a beneficiary. Previously, Toyoba and her husband lived in Kutupalong, where she faced conflicts with her brother-in-law’s wife. Seeking a better environment, they moved to live with her father. Toyoba then enrolled in a 15-day jute craft training program at the Production & Innovation Hub of PROTTYASHI. Through her relentless hard work, determination, and the direct support of PROTTYASHI, she transformed into a successful businesswoman in a short period. Her husband now actively supports her business, and together, they manage their growing enterprise. Toyoba dreams of expanding her business further in the future.
Today, Toyoba has developed a habit of saving money. She recently deposited 4,000 takas, which she plans to use for repairing her bamboo-made house. She also aims to continue saving and eventually purchase a goat. Most importantly, Toyoba has been empowered through income-generating activities, which have given her financial independence and a renewed sense of confidence.
