In response to the growing climate vulnerabilities faced by coastal communities in Khulna, a targeted initiative was undertaken in Koyra Upazila to improve access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities. Designed to be gender-responsive and disaster-resilient, the project aimed to build long-term resilience by addressing both infrastructure and awareness gaps within the community.

Successfully reached 7,573 direct beneficiaries, surpassing planned targets and extending impact to a wider coastal population.

90 Latrines

Constructed 90 climate-resilient, flood-tolerant sanitary latrines, improving safe sanitation in saline-prone areas.

26 RWHS

Installed 26 rainwater harvesting systems, ensuring reliable access to safe drinking water year-round.

1400 Aware

Reached over 1,400 individuals through hygiene awareness sessions on personal hygiene, menstrual health, and water safety.

Major Activities

Conducted an inception meeting with government officials, NGOs, and community leaders to introduce the project and its climate-resilient WASH approach.

Organized 220 community consultation meetings to ensure inclusive participation and gather local insights.

Installed 90 flood-tolerant sanitary latrines to improve hygiene and safety for vulnerable populations in saline-prone areas.

Set up 26 rainwater harvesting systems to ensure year-round access to safe drinking water.

Delivered 28 hygiene awareness sessions for adolescents and adults, promoting personal hygiene, menstrual health, and water safety.

The project was implemented in Koyra Upazila under Khulna District, Bangladesh, targeting vulnerable coastal communities affected by climate-related risks such as salinity and flooding.

The project targeted 7,573 vulnerable coastal community members (3,830 male and 3,743 female) in Koyra Upazila, Khulna. Priority was given to women, adolescent girls, children, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) who are most affected by climate-related WASH challenges such as salinity and flooding.

The project strengthened climate resilience in coastal communities of Koyra, Khulna by improving access to safe and disaster-resilient WASH facilities. Through the installation of 90 flood-tolerant latrines and 26 rainwater harvesting systems, it ensured safer sanitation and reliable drinking water in saline-prone areas, benefiting 7,573 people.
