The humanitarian crisis resulting from the influx of the Rohingya population from Myanmar has placed immense pressure on the socio-economic and environmental landscape of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. In response, the project was implemented across key Upazilas—Cox’s Bazar Sadar, Ramu, Ukhiya, and Teknaf—to enhance the resilience of host community members to climate-induced disasters and economic vulnerability. Major Achievements
60% of the project beneficiaries has established income-generating enterprises. Quantitatively, this translated to an increase in the number of businesses started by beneficiaries.
DRR knowledge contributed to improved community awareness of disaster risks and resilient practices. Quantitatively, this has observed through indicators such as the development of disaster risk reduction plans and the implementation of risk mitigation measures.
Beneficiaries gained better access to markets more effectively through shops and Kiosks in Cox’s Bazar and resulting in increased sales volumes. Quantitatively, this has measured by tracking sales revenue and market reach before and after project interventions.
Marginalized groups, including women and persons with disabilities, were empowered through economic opportunities and social inclusion. Quantitatively, this has demonstrated by an increase in the participation of marginalized groups in income-generating activities and leadership roles within community enterprises.
Major Activities
Selection of beneficiaries has been carried out using a vulnerability index developed through Key Informant Interviews with the UNO and community consultation meetings.
Market and value chain analysis has been conducted to identify suitable trades for off-farm livelihoods based on local needs and opportunities.
Training and production hubs have been established at the village level and connected to upazila-level centers to facilitate hands-on skill development.
Non-formal skill training has been provided in trades such as bamboo craft, jute craft, clothing, wooden craft, handicrafts, and dry fish processing.
Business development training has been delivered to enhance participants’ knowledge in entrepreneurship, business planning, and financial management.
Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) training has been conducted to improve beneficiaries’ preparedness for climate-related hazards and reduce business risks.
In-kind livelihood support, including tools, equipment, and materials, has been distributed to enable sustainable income-generating activities.
Post-training technical assistance has been provided to support quality production and continued skill application.
Market linkage has been established through physical shops, mobile kiosks, an e-commerce platform, and participation in local product fairs and stakeholder events.
